Shipping Industry Officials Fight Pay Raise For Great Lakes Freighter Pilots
The Coast Guard sets the rates for what pilots on ships should be paid. This year it recommended a 58 percent hike — landing pilots on the Great Lakes in the $325,000 salary range. Several shipping companies and associations are suing, and some local port authorities have joined in, citing concerns that the hike will push freighters to carry cargo elsewhere.
